Rasuwa:8,th Sept: Team Sikkim Completes Ground Assessment and Relief Distribution in Flood-Affected Rasuwa.
Team Sikkim completed a nine-day visit to flood-affected areas of Nepal from 31 August to 8 September, delivering relief assistance and assessing conditions in Trishuli, Nuwakot and Rasuwa.
Under the guidance of the Chief Minister of Sikkim, the team visited affected communities and distributed blankets, sleeping bags, solar lights, dried fruits, medicines, soap, sanitary pads, diapers, clothing, Horlicks and other ready-to-eat food items to families who lost homes, belongings and livelihoods.
Relief Distribution in Rasuwa
In Rasuwa District, relief materials were distributed to 300+ affected families:
* Grang: 24 families
* Palep: 13 families
* Gumchet: 17 families
* Ramche: 28 families
* Grecho: 11 families
* Kalika Ward No. 2: 55 families
* Kalika Ward No. 3: 40 families
* Kalika Ward No. 4: 6 families
* Kalika Ward No. 5: 24 families
* Naukunda Wards Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5: 72 families
Additionally, ten packets of biscuits and stationery were provided to Naukunda Junior High School, while eleven packets of biscuits and one packet of solar lights were provided to the relief centre at Kalika 4 Dushini School.
The floods of 26 August caused extensive damage across the affected areas. Several people remain missing, and many displaced families are staying with relatives in nearby villages or in temporary shelters. Medicines were handed over to the district administrations of Nuwakot and Rasuwa, while relief materials were provided to a monastery and several village-level committees. Books and toys were also distributed to children from affected families to support their emotional well-being and continuity of education.
Team Sikkim met families, local representatives and community members to assess urgent needs related to shelter, food, healthcare, education and essential services. The team conveyed the solidarity of the people of Sikkim and reaffirmed that Sikkim stands firmly with Nepal during this difficult period.
In coordination with local authorities and community representatives, Team Sikkim assessed immediate humanitarian needs and longer-term rehabilitation and reconstruction priorities.
The assessment confirmed extensive damage to homes, schools, roads, bridges and public infrastructure. In Rasuwa, four schools have been completely washed away: two government junior high schools in Gosaikunda, one government junior high school in Uttargaya and one private school.
Under the guidance of the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Team Sikkim will continue contributing to relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction, with particular focus on communities requiring urgent assistance.
Priorities for the Recovery of Rasuwa
The priorities identified by Team Sikkim are:
* Rehabilitating affected communities and helping displaced families return to safe and stable homes.
* Reopening damaged schools and reconstructing completely or partially destroyed school buildings.
* Constructing homes for families rendered homeless by the floods.
* Providing educational support, including school fees, books, uniforms and other essentials, to children who have lost one or both parents.
* Reconstructing roads and bridges connecting Rasuwa with Kathmandu and restoring access to essential services, markets and medical facilities.
* Restoring district offices and other essential public infrastructure damaged by the disaster.
Team Sikkim appeals to humanitarian organisations, civil society groups, institutions, private organisations and individuals to support the affected communities of Rasuwa. Those able to assist with relief, education, healthcare, shelter, infrastructure development or technical support are encouraged to coordinate with local authorities and community representatives.
The focus ahead will remain on reaching the most affected and underserved communities, meeting immediate humanitarian needs, reopening schools, rebuilding homes and essential infrastructure, and supporting the long-term recovery and reconstruction of Rasuwa.
