Gangtok:26th Aug: ‘The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (Sikkim) in response to a video uploaded by Mr Ganesh Rai, President CAP- Sikkim concerning alleged death by suicide of one elector at Namchi district and a BLO at Pakyong district due to SIR, requested for factual reports from the concerned Superintendent of Police of both districts.’
As per the report of the Senior Superintendent of Police, Namchi, no such incident pertaining to suicide of any female citizen allegedly linked to SIR hearing has been reported/complained in any of the Police stations of Namchi district.
And as per the report from Superintendent of Police, Pakyong, during the preliminary findings on the death of a BLO, there was no official complaint regarding excessive workload, undue pressure and harassment of any sort to concerned authorities by the deceased BLO and family members. No material has been found from available digital records and phone records linking his suicide to SIR related work pressure. Further, the post-mortem examination report is expected to shed light on the incident. The investigation was done through collaborative effort of Superintendent of Police, Pakyong, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Pakyong and Block Development Officer, Pakyong. The investigation also included query with available witnesses and relatives of the deceased BLO wherein no association was found between his death and SIR related work, according to the communique issued by Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Sikkim.
