Efforts at Mitigating Forest Fire Through Leaf Litter Management
Gangtok:1st July: Forest Deptt led by Minister Pintso Namgyal ,has been trying to adopt innovative ways to mitigate forest fires.This is helping to reduce Pollution if any,Communities to earn also,with protection of wild life ,their habitats.
The Deptt has given a double d hydraulic machine to Dochum-Sirwani JFM for processing the leaf litter.The machine has been installed at Atal Amrit Udyan,Green Park ,Singtam.
The D-S JFM community members collect dry leaf litter from forest.It helps to reduce fuel load and fire risks according to Simran Rai running the stall of leaf plates at MG Marg today.Presently there are many stalls to celebrate Prayavaran .
The collected leaves are taken to park.these are processed.They manufacture eco friendly leaf plates and bowls ( tapara).These are 100% biodegradable and sustainable,used to have food.The community has been earning livelihood also in this way and helping to protect environment.When the leaf litter is removed risk of fire is also less.
Besides this Deptt Chief Conservator has been trying to use technology for early forcasting,monitoring for fire spreading,in association with experts like Dr Manish Kale ,Pune,at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing C-DAC)..
