Gangtok:1st JulySadar Police Station has registered FIR
No. 58/2026 under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 and the Information Technology Act, 2000 in
connection with an investigation into the alleged online self-radicalisation of an
individual and the dissemination of extremist propaganda through digital
platforms. The investigation was initiated on the basis of credible intelligence inputs received
through the State Special Branch in close coordination with Central Intelligence
Agencies regarding suspicious online activity. Acting upon these inputs, Sikkim Police
conducted a discreet verification, which resulted in registration of the case and
commencement of a detailed investigation.
The investigation is being led by Dy. Superintendent of Police Shri Mingyur Tempo
Nadik under the supervision of senior officers of Sikkim Police. Scientific examination
of lawfully seized electronic devices and digital evidence has revealed prima facie
indications that the accused had been consuming extremist propaganda over an
extended period through online platforms and was allegedly influenced by such
content. The investigation is also examining evidence suggesting possible attempts to
disseminate and propagate extremist material through digital platforms. These
findings continue to undergo forensic examination and legal scrutiny.
The investigation presently indicates a pattern consistent with online self-
radicalisation, a phenomenon increasingly observed worldwide where vulnerable
individuals are influenced through social media platforms, encrypted messaging
applications and other online forums without any direct physical contact with extremist
organisations. This case demonstrates how digital platforms can be misused to spread
extremist narratives and underscores the importance of timely intelligence and proactive
policing.
At this stage, there is no evidence of any organised terrorist module, local extremist
network or communal angle within the State of Sikkim. The investigation presently
relates to the alleged activities of an individual. However, certain digital leads have
indicated possible interstate and international ramifications, which are being
examined in close coordination with the concerned Central Agencies and law
enforcement agencies of other States.
Owing to the operational sensitivity of these follow-up actions, the Hon’ble Director
General of Police, Sikkim, remained in close coordination with the Directors General
of Police of the concerned States to facilitate verification of emerging leads and
coordinated investigative action. To ensure that these operational measures were not
compromised, Sikkim Police deliberately deferred issuing a detailed public
statement until the immediate operational requirements had been completed.
In accordance with Section 6 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, the
prescribed statutory report has also been forwarded to the competent authorities for
appraisal, as required under law. Investigation by Sikkim Police continues in accordance
with law. Public Reassurance
Sikkim Police wishes to reassure all citizens that there is presently no intelligence
indicating any imminent threat to public safety, communal harmony or law and
order in the State. The timely detection of this case reflects the effectiveness of
intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination and the prompt, professional response
of Sikkim Police.
This case serves as a reminder that online radicalisation is an emerging security
challenge. Parents, educational institutions and the public are encouraged to remain
vigilant regarding extremist content circulated through digital platforms and to report
any suspicious online activity to Sikkim Police. Preventing radicalisation requires not
only effective policing but also the active participation of families, educational
institutions and the community.
Sikkim Police remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty
and integrity of the Nation while preserving the peace, communal harmony and
security of the people of Sikkim.
