Gangtok:30th May: Thirty-two contractual workers associated with NHPC Limited Teesta Stage-IV Hydroelectric Project have appealed to higher authorities and the Government of Sikkim after receiving notice that their contracts will not be extended ,it brings their livelihoods at risk.
The affected workers, many of whom have been serving the project for 15 to 20 years since its early stages, said their main concern is not the expiry of the current contract but the possibility of losing their jobs altogether. They have requested that their employment be continued through adjustment or redeployment in other NHPC projects rather than being terminated.
Speaking through the media, the workers urged authorities to consider their situation, stating that their families have remained financially stable because of these jobs and that they have few alternative employment opportunities after dedicating decades of service to the project.
The employees have also appealed to the Chief Minister of Sikkim, seeking intervention to ensure the continuation of their employment. They stated that many local families depend entirely on these jobs and expressed hope that the government and NHPC management will find a way to retain or rehabilitate them within ongoing projects.
