Gangtok:July: Sikkim observes State level ‘Gwala Diwas’,
to honour the milkmen. This year the official function was observed at Namchi, South Sikkim.
Addressing the gathering , Chief Guest,CM PS Tamang, said the day is observed to honour the farmers-the Milkmen.’ Our Govt has been trying to give benefits to poor.Earlier public was called ‘Pumpkin shoots which keep on growing, you keep on eating and then shun it! ‘But our Govt treats public like saplings/plants to be watered and taken care of. ‘
‘We give award to best 3 annually.This year Arun Rai was adjudged the best gwala.He has been producing 160 liters of milk per day.Hence got Gwala Ratna award . He has been presented Rs 10lakhs. ,2nd has been given Rs 7 Lakhs and 3rd 5 Lakhs. The milk production has also improved, pre 2019 only 23Thousand liters of milk was given to Sikkim Milk Union.but now in 2026 they have beeen producing 68Thousand litres.Our aim is to have 1 Lakh liters per day ,2027.
