Gangtok21st Aug: Health and Family Welfare Department,Government of Sikkim,has informed that ‘,Comprehensive Inspection Visit to Assess the Readiness of Helen Lepcha Sikkim
Government Medical College for the Upcoming Academic Year 2026–27’, has taken place today.
Chief Secretary to the Government of Sikkim, R. Telang, IAS, led an inspection and
comprehensive review meeting at Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College (HLSGMC) to
assess the final readiness and operationalization of the inaugural MBBS academic session for the academic
year 2026–27, scheduled to officially commence on September 8, 2026. The visit focused on verifying
overall preparedness and ensuring full compliance with the statutory norms notified by the National
Medical Commission (NMC).
The Chief Secretary was accompanied by Tshewang Gyachho, IAS, Secretary, Health & Family
Welfare Department, alongside the Principal Director of Medical Education, AMS-I (STNM Hospital), the
Dean, Associate Dean, Heads of Departments, and faculty members.
The Principal Chief Engineer and technical team from the Buildings and Housing Department was there.
During the extensive walkthrough and subsequent review, the Chief Secretary inspected the academic
block, lecture theatres, laboratories, and instruments and equipment for teaching purposes. The Dean
presented an overview of seat readiness across key operational parameters, covering faculty deployment,
the academic calendar, laboratories, teaching resources, and student amenities.
Addressing the gathering, the Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department, reviewed on-ground
logistics and urged collective participation from faculty and staff. He emphasized key operational priorities,
including hostel management and supervision, timely completion of mess facilities by the engineering wing,
and dedicated transportation arrangements.
Concluding the visit, Chief Secretary Shri R. Telang interacted with the administrative leadership and
faculty members, urging seamless inter-departmental coordination to complete all remaining activities well
ahead of schedule. Extending his best wishes and blessings to the entire team, the Chief Secretary noted that
the operationalization of HLSGMC marks a historic milestone in elevating medical education and
healthcare delivery across Sikkim.
