Tibetan freedom fighter 𝐋𝐨𝐛𝐠𝐚 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 for the cause of Tibet in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York on July 2, 2026.
He later passed away at Bellevue Hospital from his burn injuries.
Before the incident, he livestreamed a message on Facebook calling for Tibetan independence and unity among Tibetans.
His act came one day after China’s Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 on July 1, 2026. Tibetans in exile have protested the law, saying it threatens Tibetan language, religion, and identity. Rights groups and experts say the law expands Beijing’s push for assimilation, including Mandarin-first education and tighter political control over Tibetans, Uyghurs, Mongolians, and other nationalities under CCP rule.
