Gangtok:9thMay: Sikkim aspiring to get Geographical Indication tag for its products , had physical hearing completed for 11 products by the SEED cell and 4 by Sc& Technology Deptt.
The initiative by CM PS Tamang,has been promoted to a what appears to be is a successful realization of goals.
SEED cell along with others concerned has been working to do the needful. GI Man of India , Padmashree Dr Rajanikant , stated here today that he was told by CM earlier that Sikkim has huge potential for GI.Dr Rajnikant is here in support of the initiative and attended meetings with all India experts on the matter with members from SEED cell and deptts.
‘ Viksit Bharat – Viksit Sikkim is the advancing era during the regime of CM PS Tamang ‘,said Rajnikant.He added GI tag is a legal guarantee.PM too has been focusing on GI tags since 2014.There are many products of Sikkim not found elsewhere.Lepcha musical instruments have been given 2 GI tags.Large Vardamom and Dalley Chilly also.For this legal guarantee Community Producets Asdociations have to come forward.’
Deepen Subba, Cordinator SEEF cell,said,’ hearing for 11 products at the intervention of SEED cell and 4 of Science and Technology Deptt,has been completed.But only 3-4 replies are yet to be given.After that we are looking forward to getting certificates for the Geographical Indication of those products.’
OSD Skill Dev.Rewaz Chettri ,cited example of Meghalaya getting GI tag for their turmeric.Once we get GI tag for our products , those will get recognition in the global market also, with increased value.otherwise those will not be known globally.The results of intervention to get GI tag might not be instant,but will be good once done.’
