
Books are meant to be read -not to use as sleeping tablets : Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa
Gangtok,27th May 🙂 Deputy Speaker ,Raj Kumari Thapa,inaugurated the National Workshop on Open Source Software KOHA,here today.She was the Chief Guest at the function organised by the Sikkim Akademy,led by its President,SR Subba,at a local hotel .
Dy Speaker lauded the efforts of Akademy ,for hosting the workshop particularly for Librarians..
‘They have libraries in every school,but books are not being read.It is said Books are treated as sleeping tablet,said Dy Speaker liightly=.Books are not pile of papers but contain knowledge,our culture and history and reading habits should be developed,’ said Thapa.
‘As far as mobiles are concerned she said, ‘Our children might face health hazards due to misuse of mobile phones,therefore they should use mobiles in a positive way,’ said Dy Speaker further.She assured having a meeting regarding policy on required issues concerning library system in Sikkim in consultation with organizing committee of today’s workshop, with the Patron ,informing CM for his consent and assent.
The Resource Persons from Delhi and Aligarh also addressed the inaugural session. Prof PM Noushad Ali,Aligarh Muslim University delivering his key note address said, ‘ Its appreciable that people of Sikkim have been aspiring t to know about new Library Technology. Library is a growing organism.Google can give us millions of answers but from library you get the correct answer.It helps to open your mind and compels you to think.Policy makers here can do much for preserving culture for present and future.’ He urged Deputy Speaker ,to do something for providing opportunity to the Children?Youth.
Prof.M Madhusudan Delhi,Prof Library & Information Science ‘The top ranking library is not the one with big quantity of books ,but it depends on how much it is used . It has been informed that Sikkim libraries are lacking automation.Therefore Dy Speaker is requested to come up with financial and institutional support from Govt for integrated library system trained
librarians.
Dr Dina Subba,Organizing Secretary,Librarian NBG College Tadung,said ‘Most of the libraries here are being run as per traditional system and we are yet to digitized them.She highlighted why the Software KOHA and Library system was chosen for the workshop.
Secretary Education,Tashi Chopel ,talked about the libraries he happened to visit in Paris and Singapure .
General Secretary Purna Yonjon also addressed the gathering.
Earlier SR Subba,President Sikkim Akademy welcomed the guests.He said that we have been ignoring libraries in the State but should understand the importance of reading habit and libraries.We think mobile is sufficient,Due to it our reading habits are lost.To restore those libraries have to be given importance.That is why we have organised the workshop,here.Participants are urged to consider the knowledge received during 5 days as a blessing from God and use it.
