Gangtok:10th July : Chief Minister PS Tamang ,in a message on the occasion of NFFD has said ‘On the Occasion of National Fish Farmers Day 2026, I extend my warmest greetings and heartiest appreciation to all fish farmers and stakeholders of the fisheries sector, both in Sikkim and across the nation. Our fish farmers, through their perseverance and hard work, have become an indispensable pillar of rural livelihoods, food security, and the State’s economic prosperity.’
‘The Government of Sikkim is committed to the welfare and empowerment of every fish farmer. We firmly believe that a self-reliant fisheries sector is integral to the larger vision of a self-reliant Sikkim. Towards this end, we have been working to strengthen infrastructure, promote modern technologies, and build an enabling ecosystem for entrepreneurship in this sector.
The successful first-ever Sikkim Fish Festival at Siliguri exemplified this commitment, giving our farmers a valuable platform to showcase Sikkim’s premium rainbow trout, indigenous fish varieties, and value-added products, and opening new avenues for market expansion.’
‘Under the flagship Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), complemented by the State’s own Mukhya Mantri Matsya Utpadan Yojana (MMMUY), we continue investing in modernising production through technologies such as Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) and Biofloc, ensuring quality fish seed, strengthening market linkages, and supporting value addition. These initiatives aim to make our fish farmers economically self-sufficient while conserving the State’s rich aquatic biodiversity for future generations’.
‘On this occasion of National Fish Farmers Day, I call upon our farmers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and institutions to work together with renewed vigour to embrace innovation, encourage our youth to view fisheries as a viable and dignified profession, and build a resilient, self-sustaining fisheries sector. I am confident Sikkim’s fisheries sector will emerge as a model of sustainable, self-reliant development, contributing meaningfully to the vision of Viksit Sikkim and Viksit Bharat 2047.’
