Gangtok:12th Sept: CM PS Tamang met the Commission on Glacial Hazards, Sikkim, led by its Chairperson, Dr. Akhilesh Gupta , in presence of Minister Pintso Namgyal Lepcha who submitted the Commission’s report to him today.
The Government of Sikkim had constituted the Commission on 11 September 2024, in the aftermath of the devastating South Lhonak Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) of 2023, with the objective of preparing a Comprehensive Strategy and Roadmap for the mitigation of glacial hazards in Sikkim.
‘The Commission has put forward eight major recommendations aimed at strengthening preparedness, resilience and response mechanisms against glacial hazards and making Sikkim a model Himalayan State and a role model for glacial hazard mitigation in the country’,said CM.
CM Tamang has,congratulated Dr. Akhilesh Gupta and all the members of the Commission for their dedicated efforts, valuable expertise and commitment towards the safety and security of the people of Sikkim.
The Government of Sikkim ,CM said ,’will take these recommendations forward with determination and a spirit of collective responsibility. Together, we shall work towards building a safer, more resilient and climate-conscious Sikkim and set an example for glacial hazard mitigation across the Himalayan region’. CM has thanked the ‘ Commission for its valuable contribution and wished them continued success in their future endeavours’.
