New Delhi :1 Oct:Member of Parliament , Sikkim, Dr. Indra Hang Subba, met Union Minister for Jal Shakti, C. R. Patil, yesterday, 30 September 2026, and apprised him of the Government of Sikkim’s proposal for comprehensive Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk reduction in the State.
Dr. Subba highlighted the urgent need for proactive, science-based mitigation to protect lives, communities, livelihoods and critical infrastructure in downstream areas, particularly in light of the devastating South Lhonak GLOF of October 2023.
Dr. Subba requested the Minister to facilitate a formal technical partnership between the Government of Sikkim and the Brahmaputra Board, as proposed by the State Government, including the nomination of a multidisciplinary technical team to undertake hydrological and technical studies, assess appropriate structural and non-structural mitigation measures, and prepare implementable DPRs.
The Government of Sikkim has conveyed its readiness to provide necessary field and logistical support. Dr. Subba urged that the process be taken forward in a time-bound manner, stressing that effective mitigation must precede any future disaster rather than remain limited to post-disaster response.
The meeting focused on securing concrete Central support for strengthening Sikkim’s long-term GLOF preparedness and protecting communities and critical infrastructure.
