Citizen Action Party (CAP) 02/06/2025 expresses hearty best wishes on the occasion of completing one year of second term of Sikkim SKM government. It is a natural process to allow any elected government in democracy to calculate its period and achievements. But when the ruling party comes to congratulate the public by burning their failures, chaos, and anti-people activities as historic success, the silence of the opposition is a crime.
In the mania of power, the SKM government seems to be heating up the publicity, not the support of the people. The general public of Sikkim have felt the scene of government running with the force of these three ‘G’s’ live in the past one year. ‘Dedicated Chief Minister’ appears on the television screen, but there is no water in the hospital’s toilet. The stage will speak ‘Matrashakti and Respect’, but the elderly allowance has been stopped for months. Ideals of ‘natural beauty and environmental conservation’ flourish in the press release, but Chungthang’s Teesta is trying to fly again as the reconstruction of the post-Hydrate of the year 2019 was made for photography purposes only. So the death rate is rising now. “Suicide” is becoming the first state in the country, blind government is like “my heart is happy”!
In this one year, the people learned the language of buying and selling. The voters have started seeing the weight of notes rather than the value of citizenship. The government claims to have kept education and health a high priority, but a patient who went to take a medication has to return home with the answer “not today, come tomorrow” is speaking out the truth. The glory of “world’s best Chief Minister” is written on the city boards, but the elderly mother of the village is getting the answer “no budget, wait” when asking for allowance.
How ironic! The state power driven by the people’s sweat and labour is forcing them to say ‘thank you’ today. Perhaps the government thinks its image management is more important than the well-being of the people, where posters of development and plan cover the pain of reality.
There is no value of key in Sikkim today. ‘speaking against the government’ has become a crime. The state has wrapped the freedom of expression with clothes and made a fox diet. Questioners are declared “anti-party”, and the government that needs to answer the question is busy rubbing speeches saying “people’s blessings.”
Recently, State’s Financial Advisor Dr. Mahendra P. Lama said, “Sikkim has only one handful of earners, or only one handful of people earns.” May SKM party and government understand this statement deeply. Let the current situation of Sikkim be measured by your own people.
Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim clearly says, the power is for the service of the people, not to build a rocky structure of lies. Development is not a ‘flower plant of press release’, it is a convenience that citizens can experience in daily life. The government which cannot provide water to the hospital, allowance to the husband and wife, and labour to the workers, that government speech is just a cheap drama, which has to be paid by the people, but they are not included in the acting.
So, on this occasion of one year of the government, we again wish the best! Because the countdown of time has moved on. But with that we want to warn, the silence of the people is never permanent. Just as Tista shows its form from time to time, the voice of the people will eventually flow, be it a wall or a mattress of power, tearing it down.
