Gangtok:23rd July: From the NHPC Samadung South Sikkim Tunnel, where accident occurred on20th afternoon and workers were trapped, one Engineer and other employee who went in to help also did not return. Patel engineering Ltd has been involved in the construction there.
From that unfortunate hour onwards the rescue teams have been working to do the needful.SDRF,NDRF and Police were joined by Eastern Coalfield teams Asansol,yesterday 2 nd team also has arrived from Asansol. Al the teams together have recovered 22 bodies till late last night. So far bodies of trapped recovered are said to be from Sikkim, Jalpaiguri (WB) Pathankot,Dehradun, Odisha.
Once recovered the bodies are being sent to hospitals for postmortem.According to Dr Rasaily Superintendent Sochagang hospital Gangtok,One postmortem that has been completed reveals that cause of death is asphyxiation due to methane gas. The body had injury -burns also. More postmortems are under process in all the hospitals of Gangtok. Subsequently more information will come up.
It is well known that if mathane gas mixes with air it burns -ignites easily ,even if electricity is there or lighter etc.And person around does not get enough oxygen in body .
