Soreng, 21st Feb: ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow in collaboration with the Fisheries Department, Government of Sikkim, organised an awareness-cum-capacity building and inputs distribution programme under the North-Eastern Hill (NEH) component at Rurban Complex, Soreng, today.
Advisor (Fisheries Department, GoS) Am Prasad Sharma attended the programme as the Chief Guest, while Chairperson (Fisheries Department, GoS) Anuradha Gurung graced the programme as the Guest of Honour.
Addressing the house, the Advisor , Am Prasad Sharma emphasised the importance of time management and urged fish farmers to actively contribute towards its growth. Applauding ICAR Lucknow for its initiative, he encouraged participants to fully utilise the interactive session conducted by the expert team. Highlighting government schemes exclusively meant for fish farmers, he informed that the government would extend continued support to the Fisheries department. He further urged farmers to prepare for upcoming government initiatives and stressed the need to maintain an unbroken supply chain.
Secretary (Fisheries Department, GoS) Roshni Rai expressed gratitude to ICAR Lucknow for organising the programme in Soreng. She informed that the distribution programme would cover 60 fish farmers, including 30 farmers each from Gyalshing and Soreng districts. She further stated that scientifically prepared fish feed would be distributed to the beneficiaries. Informing that World Fisheries Day is observed annually on November 21, she highlighted various government initiatives, including fish festival to promote fisheries, support local fish farmers and celebrate the region’s rich aquatic heritage. She also acknowledged the district’s continued support to the Fisheries department and encouraged farmers to promote fish farming and consume locally produced fish within the state.
Initially, Principal Scientist (ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow) Dr. LK Tyagi provided a brief introduction to the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), stating that its research activities directly and indirectly benefit farmers.
Joint Director (Fisheries Department, Soreng) Lobsang Tamang also expressed appreciation to ICAR Lucknow for organising the programme in the district. Terming the initiative crucial for fish farmers, he urged participants to remain attentive during the interactive session and to clear their doubts with the scientists present. He also briefed the gathering on the progress made by the Fisheries department in the state so far.
An interactive session was conducted by the ICAR Lucknow team and department officials, during which fish cultivation practices and related issues were discussed in detail.
Senior Scientist (ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow) Dr. Rejani Chandran delivered the introductory remarks and welcomed the dignitaries and participants.
The programme was also attended by Principal Director (Fisheries Department, GoS) KK Shrestha, ADC (Development) Gaayas Pega, Additional Director (Fisheries Department, GoS) Karma Doma Bhutia, SDM (HQ) Prem K Subba, OSD (Culture Department, GoS) SP Subba, Deputy Director (Fisheries Department, Soreng) Duchen Lepcha, Assistant Director (Fisheries Department, GoS) Naresh Sunar along with officers, officials and stakeholders.
