Gangtok:2nd Dec:The Press Club of Sikkim expresses its deepest solidarity with the family, colleagues and friends of late journalist Saidul Islam of Diphu, Assam, whose untimely demise in Sikkim on Sunday has deeply saddened the media fraternity across both states.
Islam, founder of Hills View Today and correspondent of Gana Adhikar, and formerly associated with ETV Bharat and Assam Times Post, had travelled to Sikkim on a short leisure tour along with senior journalists from Karbi Anglong. The group arrived in Sikkim late on the night of November 30.
According to Danielson Bey, Working President of the District Press Club of Karbi Anglong, the team began their tour activities on December 1 and had visited a local waterfall earlier in the day. After returning to their lodge, Islam suddenly collapsed around 12:40 pm near Gonjang Monastery in Bojhoghari, Gangtok. Colleagues immediately rushed him towards STNM Hospital in Gangtok, the nearest medical facility, suspecting a cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, he passed away on the way despite their efforts.
Following the tragic incident, the visiting journalists cancelled the remainder of their four-day tour. Islam’s family reached Sikkim early on Monday morning and informed the District Press Club that he had long been suffering from multiple health conditions, including heart-related ailments, chest pain, diabetes and high blood pressure, which they believe may have contributed to his sudden collapse.
The Press Club of Sikkim acknowledges and appreciates the prompt support extended by the Sikkim government and the concerned hospital authorities, who ensured that all required procedures, including the post-mortem, were completed without delay. The body was handed over to the bereaved family and transported back to Assam by ambulance.
At this moment of grief, the Press Club of Sikkim once again stands in full solidarity with the family of Saidul Islam, with the District Press Club of Karbi Anglong, and with the wider journalist community mourning his loss.
