Gangtok:24th Nov:Sevok-Rangpo Railway Project 85% Completed
85 percent of the work on the much-anticipated Sevok-Rangpo railway line has been completed so far. Participating in an Akashvani News Gangtok talk show, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of N F Railway, Shri Kapinjal Kishore Sarma, informed about this. He said that the progress of the project is very good despite geographical and environmental challenges. Shri Sarma said that the total length of the project is 45 kilometres and 86 percent of the total length consists of tunnels. He said that there are a total of 5 stations and 22 bridges in the project, and construction of 19 bridges has already been completed. The CPRO stated that construction of stations and remaining bridges is to be completed by next year, and the construction of tunnels number Eight and Ten will be done by 2027. It is expected that the entire project will be completed by December Adding some more good news for the people of Sikkim, Shri Sarma said that surveys of two more projects are underway by the railways, one being the extension of rail connectivity to Gangtok city, and the other is a railway line between Melli and Dentam. Giving a description of various projects being carried out in the North East region, Shri Sarma stated that the Railway Project in Manipur is expected to be completed by the end of 2028, while the project to connect Kohima is likely to be completed by 2029. He said that N F Railway is also working on a third railway line between Guwahati and Kamakhya stations in Assam.
On rail connectivity to Bhutan, the CPRO said that the land acquisition process for two projects is underway, and the plan is to complete it within a year, after which the tender will be published. He said that the railways are targeting to complete the Kokrajhar-Gelephu project in Bhutan by 2029. On the issue of upgrading railway stations, Shri Sarma informed that a total of 60 railway stations in North-East and 92 overall in NF Railway are being upgraded with modern passenger facilities including waiting halls, easy parking facilities, circulating areas, and Divyangjan facilities.
On the issue of safety and security, he mentioned that state-of-the-art security measures have been implemented at major stations across the nation. Advanced CCTV camera networks are being provided at all major stations, with a control room and 24/7 monitoring, and a panic button connected to the CCTV system, which would automatically trigger focus on that particular feed in the control room if pressed by any individual. He also stated that RPF personnel are using modern devices like body cameras and other equipment to improve security at railway stations, according to PIB Gangtok.
