Gangtok:19th Jan : Former CM of Sikkim,Pawan Chamling ,has wished the Tamang community on Sonam Lochar, today.’As the Tamang community across the globe welcomes Sonam Lochar, I convey my sincere greetings and best wishes. This sacred festival, marking the beginning of the New Year, holds immense cultural and spiritual importance and is a proud reflection of our state’s rich traditions,’said Chamling.
‘Sonam Lochar is a celebration of renewal, new beginnings, and togetherness. It serves as a reminder of the values that define Sikkim—peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and unity in diversity—while underscoring the need to protect and promote the cultural heritage that shapes our collective identity.’
‘The SDF Government, guided by its commitment to cultural recognition and social justice, undertook landmark initiatives for the Tamang community. The Tamang language was recognised as a state language in 1995, followed by the declaration of Sonam Lochar as a gazetted holiday in 1996. In the same year, Central OBC status was secured for the community, and after persistent efforts, Tribal status was achieved in 2003. These decisions were aimed at ensuring dignity, representation, and rightful recognition for the Tamang people.’
‘On this auspicious occasion, I pray to the guardian deities of Sikkim to continue to bless our land and its people with peace, security, and prosperity.May the New Year usher in happiness, good health, and success for every family, and may it strengthen the spirit of harmony and progress across Sikkim.’
Happy Sonam Lochar!
Pawan Chamling .
