Sikkimese Rookie Mountaineer Tshering Choden Summits Mount Kilimanjaro on Independence Day
Sikkimese girl Tshering Choden summited Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 meters. She began her expedition on August 11 and reached the summit today at 9:00 AM East Africa Time.
Tshering completed her Basic Mountaineering Course at the Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure & Eco‑Tourism (IHCAE), Chemchey.
Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the Seven Summits of the World, the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. Climbing all seven is considered a prestigious mountaineering challenge.
Speaking to the media, Tshering said, “It feels great. This has been a long-standing dream, and it finally feels fulfilled.” She plans to climb other peaks from the Seven Summits in the future.
“The date of the summit was very important to me, as I wanted it to coincide with the 79th Independence Day celebrations back home. I would like to dedicate this summit to my fellow Indians,” she added.
Tshering is a resident of Chongay, Gangtok.
