Gangtok, December 4:The Sikkim Ex Naval Sailors Association (SENSA) marked a historic milestone by celebrating Indian Navy Day for the first time in Sikkim. The event was chaired by Gangtok MLA, Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, whose presence added significance to the occasion.
This year’s celebration highlighted the Indian Navy’s theme—“Maritime excellence as a combat-ready, cohesive, credible, Atmanirbhar force, safeguarding seas for a Viksit Samriddha Bharat.”
‘As part of the programme, a Fire Safety Awareness Session was conducted by Diwas Gurung, retired Fire Safety Officer. The session aimed to educate citizens on basic firefighting techniques and emergency preparedness,’said ex Sailor Keshav Sapkota.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Barfungpa praised the ex-naval servicemen for their exemplary efforts in spreading fire safety awareness across the state. He lauded their dedication, service to the nation, and continued commitment to safeguarding lives through community-oriented initiatives.

He recalled the historic Operation Trident of 1971, noting that Navy Day serves as a reminder of the Indian Navy’s courage, tactical excellence, and unwavering vigil over the nation’s maritime borders.
Chettri also informed SENSA’s new Firefighting Awareness Campaign in collaboration with Sikkim Fire Services, aimed at equipping the public with essential safety knowledge. “Safety awareness saves lives, and together, we can build a safer community,” he said.
SENSA extended gratitude to members of various Ex-Servicemen Associations, government officials, the Rajya and Zilla Sainik Boards, and representatives of the Taxi Drivers and Hawkers Associations for their support and participation.
The celebration reaffirmed SENSA’s commitment to community safety, disaster preparedness, and honouring the legacy and service of naval veterans in Sikkim.
