
Lt GENERAL SAGAT SINGH Memorial Football Cup: Tribute Tournament at 12,600 Feet
Gangtok: 4th August :The General Sagat Singh Memorial Cup is currently underway at the Thegu Football Ground, at an extraordinary altitude of 12,600 feet above sea level in Sikkim. Organized under the aegis of Indian Army, this tournament serves as a sporting tribute to the legendary Lt General Sagat Singh, who commanded the 17 Mountain Division and played a pivotal role in defending India during the historic Nathu La and Cho La clashes against Chinese forces in 1967.
Since its commencement on July 28th, the tournament has generated tremendous excitement among local communities. The opening ceremony was commemorated by MLA Pamin Lepcha following which, a vibrant cultural programme showcased Sikkimese culture, heritage, and patriotism, providing a colorful backdrop that celebrated the region’s rich traditions alongside its sporting spirit.
Week One Delivers Spectacular Football Action
The tournament’s opening week has been a goal-fest filled with spectacular moments. NMFC Gangtok edged past Kyongnosla Club 01-00 on the opening day, while SSFC defeated Sinolchu Sangh FC 03-00.
Notable performances included Everest Boys’ commanding 02-00 victory over Ranjeet Boys and Balor Boys’ impressive 03-00triumph against 15th Mile (A). A team of 3rd Battlaion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles showcased their prowess with a 04-00 rout of Changgu B, while Sherathang PS secured a 04-01 win over Zuluk Boys.
The week’s most memorable moment came when 7th Mile delivered an absolutely stunning 11-0 victory over 11 Mile, a scoreline that sent shockwaves through the tournament. Meanwhile, Sikkim Yetis kept their championship dreams alive by defeating Brotherhood 04-02 in a nail-biting penalty shootout. On Aug 4th, Veteran triumphed over 29-Kabi by a score of 08-01 while the 11th Mile Taxi Driver had close bout with the Dawa Boys winning by a score of 03-02.
Grand Finale Approaches with Star-Studded Line up
The tournament continues to build momentum as it heads toward its conclusion. The grand final is scheduled for August 15th, coinciding with India’s Independence Day celebrations, adding patriotic fervour.
Adding significant star power to the event, renowned National footballer Bikash Jairu will attend as Chief Guest on August 13th, bringing prestige and excitement to the tournament. His presence is expected to inspire young players and elevate the profile of football even more in the region.
