The Sikkim Commission on Glacial Hazards called on me today official residence to present a detailed update on its progress, ongoing agenda, and evolving draft recommendations.
Constituted on 11 September 2024 by Cabinet decision, the Commission is chaired by eminent scientist Dr Akhilesh Gupta, former Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Science and Technology, and includes top experts from across India. Its mandate is to assess glacial hazards and GLOFs, synthesize scientific insights, and propose actionable policies to safeguard Sikkim from glacial disasters.
Over the past months, the Commission has held four strategic meetings, conducted field visits, consulted widely with stakeholders, reviewed the latest research, and coordinated with central and state bodies, local communities, and defense agencies to ensure a cohesive, well-informed approach.
I express my appreciation for their evidence-based and community-oriented efforts and emphasized that the final recommendations must reflect Sikkim’s unique needs and the voices of its people. The State Government stands fully committed to supporting their implementation
