
Gangtok:27th Nov: We hear of certain Indian States like Tamil Nadu ,Mizoram and others having norms for Govt employees wearing their traditional attire.Not to miss countries like Saudi Arabia,Philippines and of course Bhutan.
Sikkim with Lepcha,Bhutia and Nepali Communities having different traditional attire(s) have also similar system initiated by CM PS Tamang led Govt.
Govt employees , attending office in ethnic attire has become a routine now. Every Thursday offices projecting Culture has become order of the day.
While Gen Z males are mostly observed following fusion fashion,but female go to the extent of wearing traditional ornaments also.
But how and why to find out visit to the Food & Civil Supplies’ Consumers Cell,was beneficial. Counsellor Consumer Cell, Govt of Sikkim, Sunita Subba ,highlighted it as also how the employees feel and results
‘ Govt of Sikkim ,issued a circular about it,CM PS Golay Sir appealed to all the Govt employees to wear traditional attire.So now we attend office duty every Thursday,in traditional attire,’ said Sunita Subba,Counsellor ,Consumer Complaint Cell,Food & Civil Supplies’ Deptt,here today.
‘ It is the First ever initiative of the State Govt.It also fosters our pride and the Community.We also feel like wearing it.’
‘We deal with public and complainants come to our office on they like it.Some of them have already appreciated and said they will also wear traditional dresses.Its once a week that we wear our traditional attire and I take pride in wearing it,’ added Counsellor.
However it is well known that Sikkim has 3 ethnic communities and some from other parts of the country.Secretary of Deptt of Personnel,under CM PS Tamang has issued a circular on 29th April ‘ 25 for all the employees of DOP saying, ‘ With a view to preserve, promote our cultural heritage and to show case vibrant diversity ,’ all those serving the DOP were directed to wear traditional attire on e a week.’Subsequently,Chief Secretary R Telang ,also issued a circular regarding the same ,in November ’25 ( this month) ‘ Committed to fostering pride in our cultural heritage among all the employees.’
Accordingly all the State Govt employees in affiliated organizations and public sector undertakings under Govt of Sikkim, have been directed to observe Traditional Wear Work Day’ every Thursday! And this is how now it has been started by some deptt(s) to begin with ,while others appear to be looking forward to get Ethnic Attire stitched! As earlier it was hardly worn and considered ‘not in ‘ as per the standards of modernity.
