
Gangtok: 4th sept: CM PS Tamang ,naugurated the first Sikkim National Law University (SNLU) in the presence of Chief Justice and Chancellor SNLU, Justice Biswanath Somadder ,who has played a pivotal role in making this historic day a reality. This Law University is not just an institution; it is a sanctuary of justice, a long-cherished dream of our people, and a significant milestone in strengthening legal education in our state.’
‘With its inception, the youth of Sikkim now have the opportunity to pursue quality legal education within their homeland, laying the foundation for a more robust justice system and a new generation of legal professionals guided by integrity, compassion, and service.’
CM has extended appreciation to the Chief Justice, the Judges of the High Court, the Law Department, and all stakeholders whose tireless efforts led to this achievement.’
The University has already commenced academic operations from the Sikkim Judicial Academy, and the SICUN campus at Assam Lingzey has been identified for permanent development with adequate state budgetary support.
In further support of legal empowerment, the Government has launched:
• The Directorate of Prosecution for efficient justice delivery,
• The Kanooni Sahayog Abhiyan to provide legal aid at the grassroots level,
• The Nari Adalat, empowering women to resolve local disputes informally.
CM added, ‘It gives me great pride to share that Sikkim ranks No. 1 among small states in the India Justice Report 2025, excelling in policing, women’s representation, prison management, and judicial efficiency.’
‘These accomplishments reflect our commitment to justice, inclusivity, and people-centric governance. As we look ahead, I am confident that the Sikkim National Law University will emerge as a beacon of knowledge and justice, contributing significantly to our state and the nation.’
