BJP Demands SKM Government “Walk the Talk” on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Sikkim and bring Resolution in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly of conducting SIR under Article 371
Gangtok, Dec: 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly demands for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Sikkim, strictly under the ambit of Article 371F of the Constitution of India and referencing the legal provisions of the Representation of Sikkim Subject Act 1974 and the Sikkim Citizenship Order of 1975.
This call comes in the wake of statements made in the Lok Sabha yesterday by the Member of Parliament from Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), Shri Indra Hang Subba.
SKM MP’s Parliament Statement Validates BJP’s Core Demand
The BJP notes that in the Parliament, Shri Subba emphasized the historical context of elections in Sikkim, specifically mentioning that the first election was conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India following the Representation of Sikkim Subject Act, 1974. He also highlighted the significantly high voter turnout in Sikkim (80%) compared to the national average (65%), stressing the crucial need for special attention when the revision of electoral rolls (SIR) is conducted in the state.
Shri Subba’s assertion that an increase of “even 1,000 extra voters in Sikkim will bring a drastic change in the voting result” powerfully underscores the need for meticulous and focused revision, implicitly acknowledging the sensitivity surrounding the electoral process and the necessity of protecting the original legal framework.
“The statements made by the ruling party’s Lok Sabha MP in the highest forum of Indian democracy—the Parliament—are a clear and ringing endorsement of the need for a special, focused revision that respects the historical and legal sanctity of Sikkim’s political identity. We believe this unequivocally proves that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the context of the Representation of Sikkim Subject Act, 1974 and the Sikkim Citizenship Order of 1975 is the immediate need of the hour”.
Golden Opportunity for SKM in Sikkim Assembly Session
With the sitting of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly scheduled for December 12, 2025, the BJP asserts that the ruling SKM party now has a golden opportunity to “walk the talk” and prove its commitment to the ideals its MP laid bare before the entire nation.
The SKM government frequently proclaims its commitment to making Sikkim “Sunaulo, Samriddha, and Samartha” and to protecting the political rights of the future generation. The BJP strongly believes that bringing a resolution on the floor of the Assembly for a Special Intensive Revision under Article 371F is the most concrete step the government can take to demonstrate this commitment.
BJP Demands Immediate Resolution in Assembly
Given that the SKM enjoys absolute majority with not a single opposition legislator in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, the fear of opposition non-support is nil. The stage is perfectly set for the ruling party to act decisively.
The BJP, therefore, unequivocally demands that the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government bring a resolution in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly tomorrow, December 12, 2025, stating that:
1. The Sikkim Government fully supports a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Sikkim.
2. This SIR must be conducted under the legal and constitutional guarantee of Article 371F, strictly upholding the legal provisions of the Representation of Sikkim Subject Act, 1974 and the Sikkim Citizenship Order of 1975.
This action will prove beyond doubt that the SKM party will always stand for the protection of the old laws of Sikkim and the rights of the indigenous population of Sikkim, according to DR Thapa State President, BJP Sikkim
