Gangtok,13 September : The third edition of the Gangtok Hill Trek, jointly organised by the Sikkim Mountaineering Association (SMA) and the Mountaineering and Adventure Institute of Sikkim (MAIS), successfully concluded on September 12. The one-day trek witnessed participation from students, government employees and local youth.
This year’s trek covered the scenic route connecting Tamjay, Phodong and Kabi Lungchok, highlighting the region’s potential for adventure tourism and sustainable eco-tourism.
SMA President Kunzang Gyatso said the Tamjay,Phodong,Kabi Lungchok trail could be developed as a one-, two- or three-day trekking circuit. He said the initiative could create new livelihood and income opportunities for local communities while promoting sustainable tourism.
He also stressed the need for improved infrastructure along the trail, including small footbridges, regular trail maintenance, temporary shelters during the monsoon and designated camping sites. He further called for a simplified permit process to make the trail more accessible to visitors.
In a press statement, SMA Secretary Prabin Khaling expressed gratitude to Namerakpam Jaswant, IFS (Wildlife and Forest Conservation), the DFO, the Forest Department, Sikkim Police check-post personnel, the Indian Army’s 17 Mountain Division, Gangtok, the Indian Army personnel stationed in the Tamjay area, MAIS, SMA and the Tourism Department for their support and cooperation in successfully conducting the trek.
According to the organisers, July to September is an ideal period for trekking along the route, offering visitors lush greenery, alpine flora and scenic natural landscapes.
SMA and MAIS stated that with continued cooperation among the concerned departments, security agencies and local stakeholders, the Tamjay,Phodong,Kabi Lungchok trail has the potential to emerge as one of Sikkim’s notable eco-tourism and adventure tourism destinations.
