PIB Gangtok Organises VARTA Media Interaction Session in Namchi
Focus on VB-G RAM G and Nasha Mukht Bharat Abhiyan
Gangtok:25th April: A day-long media interaction session “VARTA” on “Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025” and “Nasha Mukht Bharat Abhiyan” was organised by Press Information Bureau (PIB), Gangtok at Namchi, today. The event brought together IPRD officials, regional journalists, media professionals from electronic and digital platforms for an open discussion on the evolving media landscape, responsible journalism, and communication of public welfare schemes including VB-G RAM G.
Smt. Sonam Doma Bhutia, Senior Superintendent of Police, Namchi, was present on this occasion as the Chief Guest. SSP Bhutia in her address mentioned that there are basically three parts which are crucial towards the successful implementation of the Nasha Mukht Abhiyan and making the society free from the drug menace. Firstly, Prevention, wherein a targeted approach is focused on the demand for this menace, through various outreach programmes, to sensitise the general population about the threat of this evil. Secondly, Enforcement, wherein Police authorities are intensely cracking down on drug peddlers and suppliers, resulting in numerous arrests and major drug seizures. And finally, the treatment and rehabilitation stage, where identification, counselling, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals with substance dependence are executed.
She further added that, as part of the initiative of the Namchi district authorities, any program organised in the district is required to have a dedicated awareness slot for the Nasha Mukt message during the program.
Conducting a session on VB-G RAM G, Silas Rai, APO, MGNREGA Cell, RDD, Govt. of Sikkim, spoke in detail about the transformative changes in the new bill compared to MGNREGA. He also mentioned that the mission shifts focus from short-term wage support to creating sustainable livelihoods and durable assets. This comprehensive approach integrates skill development and climate resilience, empowering Gram Panchayats as the primary drivers of local economic planning and execution.
He also mentioned the key features of the new act, including an increase in guaranteed wage employment from 100 days to 125 days per rural household in each financial year. He also mentioned that VB-G RAM G, uses digital tools to enhance transparency, accountability, and project efficiency. He also requested the media present on the occasion to act as a force multiplier to spread the benefits of this new initiative of the Govt. and counter various false narratives.
At the outset, Manas Pratim Sarma, Assistant Director, PIB & Akashvani News Gangtok, in his welcome speech, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries present and the members of the media fraternity at the Varta, gave a brief account of the agenda of the program. He also mentioned the recent interaction with Sikkim Chief Minister, wherein CM Prem Singh Tamang Golay emphasised that the state follows a zero-tolerance policy against drugs and is taking strong and coordinated measures to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Speaking on the occasion, Namchi IPRD official expressed gratitude to PIB, Gangtok for organising the Varta in Namchi. The session also included a question-and-answer session, providing a valuable opportunity for media professionals to engage with officials and clarify their doubts.
