Gangtok, February 25: The Education Department of the Government of Sikkim successfully conducted a three-day in-house workshop for master trainers of Nepali and other eight indigenous languages at the elementary level.
Organised under the theme of Strengthening language Teaching and learning as per National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the workshop brought together teachers of eight native languages of Sikkim Rai, Tamang, Sherpa, Gurung, Mangar, Newar, Mukhia, Bhujel along with Nepali. A total of 63 master trainers participated in the workshop, which also included two resource persons from each language group.
Assistant Professor at SCERT, Ms. Roshni Sharma, provided insights on the approach to learning standards from aims to learning outcomes. Former Director of the Education Department and noted linguist,Rudra Paudyal, addressed the participants on the importance of language in his keynote speech.
Speaking on behalf of the Education Department, Ms. Sudha Rai, In-charge of the indigenous Language Development Board and Deputy Director, highlighted the objectives of the workshop. She stated that such initiatives would play a crucial role in the development of native languages in the state and help enhance the quality of teachers providing training.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by ATBO Mukhia Language representative Ms. Narilata Mukhia and was moderated by Mr. Rupraj Gurung, Textbook Officer for the Gurung language.
Held from February 23 to February 25, the workshop included key activities such as the preparation of Learning Teaching Material (LTM) samples, textbook development, and group presentations. According to Deputy Director Rai, resource persons from all native languages actively contributed through presentations and training sessions.
During the valedictory session, participating teachers shared their experiences, stating that the workshop was highly beneficial and would significantly contribute to the development of language teaching across the state.
