GANGTOK, 23 February 2025: The Forest and Environment Department, Government of Sikkim, successfully hosted an engaging state-level exhibition at MG Marg dedicated to environmental education, sustainable living practices, and innovative eco-ideas. Organized under the Environment Education Programme (EEP) 2025-26 with the support of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, the event served as a premier platform for ecological advocacy and grassroots environmental stewardship.
The exhibition featured a diverse array of innovative projects and creative models that highlighted practical approaches toward adopting sustainable lifestyles. Through interactive displays, these young “agents of change” demonstrated sophisticated skills in waste management, resource conservation, upcycling and repurposing of waste into teaching learning materials also demonstrating revenue models through waste management.
As our State remains a pioneer in environmental stewardship, this event aimed to bring the visionary Eco-Club projects out of the classroom and into the public eye, aligning with the national “Mission LiFE” initiative. By hosting the exhibition in this vibrant heart of the city, the event provided a rare platform to students to foster a meaningful dialogue with the wider community, transforming a simple school project into a public movement for ecological mindfulness. The initiative drew enthusiastic involvement from local residents, tourists, pedestrians, youth groups, officers from RDD, UDD, GMC, local NGOs and environmental supporters. The Forest and Environment Department underscored that Sikkim’s implementation of the EEP remains a national benchmark. Due to its consistent application of best practices and deep community engagement, Sikkim has been twice honored with the “Best State Environment Education Programme (EEP) Award” by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India.
“Our students are moving beyond simple awareness to becoming active proponents of sustainable living,” stated a Department official. “By showcasing these projects at the state level, they act as powerful agents of change, ensuring a cascading effect that extends environmental education from the classroom to the entire community.”
The event successfully translated academic learning into community-level adoption of eco-friendly practices and green skills for livelihood. By fostering problem-solving skills and technical know-how among the youth, the department continues to solidify Sikkim’s legacy as a “Green State,” generating a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens dedicated to protecting the region’s rich biodiversity.
