Sikkim Banks remain Closed due to Nationwide bank strike
Gangtok:27thJan: Sikkim Banks joined the nationwide strike today. The strike was called by United Forum of Bank Unions. The forum ,a United organization of Nine unions has been demanding 5 day work weeks. They have been pressing for work days from Monday to Friday and holiday every Saturday . Sundays are already holidays. The Forum has cited example of Reserve Bank of India, Union Ministry, NABARD, LIC and 7 major bodies having 5 day working weeks.
They have been reiterating 5 day,after 2022 talks with Govt and any notice pending to implement it.15 Lakh employees would be benefitting if done.
Sikkim had SBS functioning as it does not come under RBI and enjoys 64 holidays( as per 2025) & any Govt closure ,excluding Sundays .
Though the strike was meant for public sector bank employees and officers,rest of the banks also showed solidarity.
However,since most of the things could be done digitally it was not that troublesome.
