Gangtok,27th Sept : Sikkim CM wishes all on the occasion of World Tourism Day. Today, as the global community observes World Tourism Day 2025 under the banner “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” we reaffirm a profound truth: tourism is one of the world’s great unifiers.
Yet, it is also a sector that must evolve to regenerate the ecosystems we depend on, to empower the communities we visit, and to safeguard the heritage we inherit. This year’s theme is both an inspiration and a solemn call to action: to align economic opportunity with ecological responsibility.
In Sikkim, we have long embraced the belief that the green choice is the wise choice. Guided by the ethos of “prosper through preservation,” we have pioneered global leadership in green governance not to be different, but to be durable. We are a state that turned our soil organic, our forests sacred, and our villages into living classrooms of hospitality.
Our small Himalayan state shoulders an outsized responsibility: to protect some of the world’s highest peaks and purest rivers at their source, to safeguard sacred forests and fragile glaciers, and to keep alive the living cultures of our local communities.
For us, tourism is a covenant with nature and with each other. We believe that authentic travel is transformative, not only for the visitor but also for the visited. We envision tourism that regenerates ecosystems, empowers communities, strengthens climate resilience, and fosters peace through cultural exchange. Our mountains, valleys, rivers, monasteries, traditions, crafts, and festivals remind us that heritage both natural and cultural is not a commodity to be consumed, but a legacy to be protected.
Sikkim’s aspiration is modest but mighty: to be a high-altitude laboratory of sustainable tourism. If a small Himalayan state can model sustainability with humility and discipline, then larger regions and nations can follow suit.
On this World Tourism Day, let us unite behind a simple pledge: that tourism will not only help us see the world, but also save it. Together, let us ensure that every journey taken leaves the world stronger, fairer, and more united.
May Sikkim continue to shine as a beacon of sustainable tourism excellence.
