A candid conversation with Mr Bhaichung Bhutia ,took place at India Today conclave, to discuss Inspiring India, Sports, “Sikkim Sporting Spirit: From the GOAT”. The legendary Indian footballer and former politician, reflected on his journey through sports and public life, emphasising the importance of athletes entering politics to bring integrity, discipline, and a result-oriented mindset. Citing Sikkim as an example, he deliberated on the infrastructural hurdles and the need for sustainable, long-term sports development beyond seasonal festivals. He urged for stronger support system, better coaching education, and more inclusive policies to harness talent across regions, particularly in the Northeast and called on iconic athletes to speak up for systemic reforms, besides receiving accolades. He stated that he remains hopeful that with the right vision and commitment, India can improve its global football standing and evolve into a true sporting nation.
