
Gangtok:Ratanlal Sapkota led SMS Sangh Commemorates 8th May Indo-Sikkim Agreement’s 52nd anniversary
The Agreement between Chogyal of Sikkim as Political Parties of Sikkim and Govt of India signed on 8th May 1973 is now part of history.The day is Commemorates annually by the Sikkim Mulniwasi Suraksha Sangthan here .
Rtd.SD Bhutia,IRS was the Chief Guest,Mrs DK Bhandari former MP Lok Sabha was the Guest of Honour,while former Mondals of Sikkim attended as Special Guests.Theme of the programme was ‘forging unity,upholding peace and Sikkim’s role in national security.
Former Mondals were felicitated for their contributions during the Chogyal’s regime.And helping to maintain SS Registers.
Ratanlal Sapkota, President of the organisation,addressed the gathering about the Agreement,Sikkim Subject,current influx,National security,Fake Aadhar cards and Sikkim – Darjeeling issue.
‘ The 8th May Agreement played a foundational role in transforming Sikkim from the monarchial Governance to a fully democratic State of India.Sikkim has a great role to play for Indian national security ,forging unity and upholding peace,’ said Sapkota .
Sapkota assured public any help incase of issues related to their rights.He projected videos of non- citizens being questioned by Police about their Aadhar cards( the cards in question were originally meant for Citizens of India only).This type of cases indicate corruption somewhere and of course threat to national security,’ he explained.
Condemning the idea of Sikkim – Darjeeling merger on the basis of historic proof , President of SMS Sangh Sapkota,disclosed that the Chogyal of Sikkim had asked GOI if Darjeeling will be returned or Treaty will be there.The reported response was 1950 Treaty, putting an end to merger.While Darjeeling politician Ratan Lal Brahmin had submitted a memorandum to merge Sikkim with Assam,but the it also did not happen .
Ratan Lal Sapkota suggested teaching of history of Sikkim in class 7-8.Introduction of ILP system and bringing up a resolution in Sikkim Legislative Assembly on ‘ no modification to Sikkim’s existing territorial extent.’
