10th Ayurveda Day Sikkim through the Eyes of Dr Ligima Research Officer

Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI), TadongRegional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI), Tadong, Gangtok, under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, successfully organized and celebrated the 10th Ayurveda Day with the global theme “Ayurveda for People and Planet” through a series of programmes conducted from 9th to 23rd September 2025. The celebration began with a formal inaugural ceremony on 9th September at the institute conference hall and continued for 15 days with diverse activities aimed at creating awareness about Ayurveda, promoting preventive healthcare, and encouraging community participation. Daily awareness lectures were delivered at the OPD of RARI as well as across the Ayurveda Health Centres at Geyzing, Mangan, and Jorethang, while extensive outreach under the Tribal Health Care Research Programme (TSP) and Ayurveda Mobile Health Care Programme (SCSP) provided practical guidance on diet, lifestyle, yoga, and Ayurveda-based preventive strategies to hundreds of patients and attendants. Special health camps were held at various institutions including Saraswati Vidya Niketan (Tadong), Old Age Home (Jalipool, Ranipool), 758 BRTF (Chandmari, Gangtok), and Sashastra Seema Bal SHQ (Ranipool), where free consultations, distribution of medicines, yoga demonstrations, and IEC dissemination benefitted more than 400 individuals comprising school children, elderly citizens, women, and defence personnel. To promote holistic nutrition and healthy living, Poshakahara kits along with Ayurveda-based IEC materials were distributed among school students, women, and senior citizens. A five-day medicinal plant exhibition and mini-expo was organized at RARI, Gangtok, in addition to various activities at Baha’i School, Tadong, which attracted large numbers of students, teachers, giving them hands-on exposure to medicinal plants. To engage the younger generation, essay and poster competitions were conducted at Bahá’í School with enthusiastic participation from over 30 students, while Prakriti assessments were carried out for patients and staff at the OPD, accompanied by documentation of success stories from those benefitting from Ayurvedic care. In order to emphasize diet-based wellness, a “Healthy Non-Heating Food Recipe” competition was held for RARI employees, further strengthening staff engagement in the celebrations. As part of community connect initiatives, medicinal plant saplings were distributed at OPDs, health camps, and outreach sites, reaching hundreds of households, while a specially designed selfie point with a QR code captioned “I Support Ayurveda” was set up at the institute premises to creatively involve the public and spread the message of Ayurveda. The celebrations concluded with a valedictory function on 23rd September 2025 at 4:00 PM in the Conference Hall of RARI, Gangtok, marking the successful culmination of a fortnight-long awareness campaign that reached more than 5,000 beneficiaries, including patients and OPD visitors, school children, women, defence personnel, senior citizens, and the general public, thereby significantly contributing to the wider promotion and acceptance of Ayurveda for the well-being of people and sustainability of the planet.
